Program 2 Art Georges Vanier

What is Program 2 Art?

Program 2 Art is a special, focused art program designed for students who are very serious about their art. After presenting some of their own work and completing specific assigned drawing projects, students interested in this program meet for an interview with Mr. Rick Gee, instructor for Program 2 Art. When adequate abilities and the necessary attitude are made apparent, the students will be accepted into the classes. All students must have a grade 9 Visual Art course credit or equivalent to enter the grade 10 course of this program.

The Program

In each school year (grades 10, 11, and 12), there are 2 required credits taken in the program; one semester’s focus is on “Drawing and Painting” and related history and theory, the other focusing on “Design” and its related history and theory. Students are strongly recommended to take the other Vanier Art credits (AP Studio Art, photography, ceramics and 3d design, animation, web design, and computer graphics) as part of Program 2 Art. Developing a professional attitude, art skills, creative and effective approaches to problem solving, personal responsibility for your growth are major goals of this program. Program 2 Art teaching staff consistently pay individualized attention to each student’s strengths and areas needing development. Some areas of your art studies will include advancing your “visual literacy: creativity, drawing, painting, perspective, architecture, design, 3D design and ceramics, printmaking, compute graphics, animation, typography, Art theory, art history and appreciation.

Career options, exhibitions, portfolio preparation and other course selections (like History, Business, Design Technology, etc) are regularly discussed. With exposure to history, architecture, art galleries, museums and art and design being so crucial to developing art students, field trips are regular experiences in the program. The Ontario College of Art and Design, the Design Exchange, the ROM, the McMichael Gallery, the Distillery District and the Toronto Zoo are just some of the places visited recently.

Art faculties and studios are readily accessible. The studios are regularly open before and after school and at lunch. Opportunities to take part in Art experiences outside the school are often brought to student’s attention, too. Many art magazines, books, videos, and DVDs are available to our students from the Art Department’s own library and through the main GVSS library/resource centre.
